Orthotics for Toddlers

Delicate little feet

Baby’s feet don’t have bones. They are made of soft cartilage and a layer of fat that surrounds your baby’s feet serves as a protection for this delicate structure. But because the cartilage is so fragile and flexible, it can be easily twisted or formed into the wrong shape. When your baby learns to stand, the cartilage structure in their feet will begin to slowly turn into bones. Because the bone tissue takes time to fully develop and it is still vulnerable to injuries and deformities, it is extremely important to look after your toddler’s feet properly to prevent any potential feet problems at later stages.

Feet problems in toddlers

Many babies and toddlers appear to have flat feet – that is because the foot arches do not develop until later in life. Moreover, toddler’s foot arches are covered under a protective fat tissue. If, however, your toddler complains of foot or leg pain and you notice that their gait is affected – if they walk on the inside of the foot, or if they often trip or limp, your toddler may need some shoe orthotics that will help them maintain the correct posture and alleviate the pain.

Should feet problems in toddlers be treated?

It is important to address any feet problems that your toddler experiences as soon as you notice them. If they are left untreated, the soft cartilage and bone tissues may develop abnormally because of the uneven pressure and incorrect weight distribution placed on your child’s feet when standing, walking or running. These changes to the bones and joints may become a permanent condition that will cause pain in the feet, the knees, the hips and the lower back. Flat foot deformity may also restrict foot movements and make your child’s feet feel numb and stiff.

Dr Insole’s orthotics for toddlers

Orthotics, or custom-made insoles, often help toddlers and children who suffer from flat foot deformity and its symptoms. They are made to measure to give your toddler the most appropriate support and the maximum comfort. Well-fitted, custom-made orthotics can prevent any further deformity and damage to your child’s feet. They can improve foot alignment, foot and ankle stability and the posture of your toddler. Dr Insole specialises in toddler and children custom-made orthotics. To prepare insoles for your toddler, we will first assess their gait and identify their particular, individual needs. This allows us to ensure that your toddler receives all the necessary support and the most comfortable fit. Dr Insole’s toddler orthotics are light and flexible – as they do not limit movements, they are perfect for active, busy children.
