Foot and ankle fractures are commonly occurring injuries, which can result from a fall, a sports-related accident or a twist. Symptoms of a broken foot or ankle can include pain, soreness and sensitivity around the injured area, swelling and bruising, limited mobility, problems standing and putting weight on the foot or ankle, a cracking sound at the time of the injury, a visible dislocation and, in case of an open fracture, a bone protruding through the skin.
If you suspect a foot or ankle fracture, it is important to consult a doctor immediately to receive appropriate diagnosis and treatment. Depending on the type and severity of your injury, you will be advised on the most appropriate form of treatment. If the broken bone is dislocated, it will have to be realigned to its natural position – this procedure is called reduction. Surgery is often recommended in case of severe, complicated fractures. Most foot and ankle fractures are immobilised for about six weeks to enable appropriate healing. Depending on the severity of the fracture, doctors use either plaster casts or splints.
Recovery from a foot or ankle fracture normally lasts between 6 and 12 weeks, although it may be longer in case of more serious fractures. It is recommended to avoid putting weight on the injured foot or ankle for 6 to 10 weeks. It may take between 3 and 4 months before you can return to your usual activities (apart from sports). Returning to your regular sports activities may take several months. Your physiotherapist will advise you on the types of exercises that will strengthen the muscles and support the healing processes.
If you already suffer from bunions then custom-made orthotic insoles can help to cushion and cup the bunion providing some pain relief and preventing the bunion from developing further.
As well as this, our insoles can help to ward off the overpronation that stems from the bunion, as it weighs the foot towards the inside. This can cause other forms of foot pain and injuries and hip, knee and back pain. It can also affect your posture. By providing support to the base of the bunion and the inside of the foot, our insoles can help to correct the overpronated foot and help to stave off any problems that are caused by this.
A pair of custom-made orthotic insoles can be a particularly helpful aid when recovering from a broken foot or ankle. Having your foot immobilised for several weeks will weaken your muscles and may leave your foot or ankle feeling stiff, swollen or sore. Regaining the full range of motions will be a gradual process, so wearing custom-made orthotic insoles during that time can significantly improve your comfort and give you the support you need. Dr Insole’s bespoke orthotics stabilise and align your feet, giving you confidence in walking. Dr Insole’s bespoke orthotics are perfectly matched to your feet, which makes them exceptionally effective in correcting any gait abnormalities and instabilities that may contribute to foot and ankle injuries.
